Alternative Support
Due to its foundations of psychology, coaching can be confused with other fields such as psychiatry, psychotherapy or counselling. It is important to distinguish Positive Psychology Coaching as an approach to personal development and not an alternative to these resources.
A psychiatrist is a doctor who is trained in treating severe mental illness such as; anxiety attacks, chronic depression or drug and alcohol dependencies. A Positive Psychology Coach is not qualified to address these issues. If you are facing such difficulties you can learn more about psychiatry here.
Psychotherapy looks into psychological and psychosomatic issues; deep and prolonged human suffering, situational crises and development needs. It typically looks into the past to explain the present, seeking insight into cause and effect and the origins of emotions. Whilst psychotherapy focuses on the past, Positive Psychology Coaching focuses primarily on your present and your future. If you are having troubles with past traumas and would like to connect with a therapist, you can find more information here.
Counselling takes a similar approach to psychotherapy, it also focuses on the past. However, engagements are usually short-term and address a particular crisis such as; a divorce, illness or bereavement. If you like support with an issue you’re currently facing, further information on counselling can be found here.
To summarise, Positive Psychology Coaching is not an alternative approach to dealing with the issues presented above. If you are facing such challenges, it is strongly recommended that you seek professional help. If you would like some assistance in doing so, please feel free to get in touch.
Good luck and God bless.
